AIR QUALITY - School Closure (Update 12/11 - 12:23 pm): Refugio HS and SYHS closed on Tuesday, 12/12).
Santa Ynez Valley Union High School and Refugio High School will be closed Tuesday, December 12, 2017 as maintenance and custodial crews clean up fallen ash from the last several days in anticipation of school reopening on Wednesday, December 13. Assuming no further significant concerns over smoke and ash, final exams will still be administered Wednesday through Friday as planned. District officials continue to monitor air quality on a day-to-day basis and will take appropriate action with regard to additional days of school closure as necessary. For now, assume that school will be in session on Wednesday; any changes will be posted on www.refugiohs.org and sent out through text message and phone calls.

We will be on the Finals Schedule starting on Wednesday. Please refer to the link to the left for details about the changed schedule. (Students will be released at 12:15 pm on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday).

AIR QUALITY CONCERNS (Update - 12/10, 2:27 pm): Refugio HS and SYHS closed tomorrow (Monday, 12/11).

With conditions changing daily as the result of the Thomas and other Southern California fires, Santa Ynez Valley Union High School District continues to closely monitor air quality with the best interests of the health of our students in mind. Monitoring includes both a subjective evaluation of conditions and objective reviews of hourly updates from the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District. Interventions to protect our students in the event of continued poor air quality may include limiting time outdoors, banning outdoor activities which require exertion (including those in P.E. classes and athletic practices and events), turning off air handlers which bring outside air into the classroom, or in extreme circumstances, cancelling school altogether. As of 2:27 PM, Sunday, December 10, Refugio High School will be NOT be in session tomorrow, Monday, December 11, but is scheduled to open again on Tuesday, December 12.

Should conditions worsen and school required to be closed for additional days, notice will be sent out here on this website, as well as text and phone call.

Please call me on my Google phone # should you have any questions: (424)235-3744 (Lawrence Shin)

STUDENT VOTER REGISTRATION ACT OF 2003
The Student Voter Registration Act of 2003 (Elections Code sections 2145-2148) was implemented to ensure every school in California does all in its power to provide a meaningful opportunity to eligible high school students to register to vote. Voter registration cards will be available in the school office shortly for 16, 17, or 18-year-olds. Remember, California now allows 16- and 17-year olds to pre-register to vote. Their registrations will automatically become active once they turn 18.
As an alternative to filling out a card, you may visit: http://RegisterToVote.ca.gov

    Canvas Welcome

Refugio High School is proud to announce that beginning this year, our students will be using the Canvas Learning Management System to manage their school work. With Canvas, each student’s assignments and grades will be available 24/7 through an app on their phone or tablet or through a browser on a desktop or laptop computer at school or home. Students—and their parents through a Parent Observer account—will be able to view a calendar of all their classes and when assignments are due; when they click on those assignments, they will be able to access the materials and instructions and download them or, depending on the assignment, complete the entire assignment online. When a teacher assigns work that can be completed entirely online, students can complete the assignment, submit it, and have it graded and returned to them all paperlessly. Students will be able to message their teachers and receive notifications and reminders about upcoming due dates, missing assignments, and a whole lot more. Many colleges and universities across the country--including Harvard, Stanford and some of the University of California campuses--are adopting the Canvas LMS, and Refugio High School is excited to be joining this dynamic education community. To take full advantage of the new system, students should have a smartphone, tablet or laptop that they can bring with them to school. Instructions about logging into their Canvas accounts can be found here. Instructions about creating a Parent Observer account can also be found here. It's an exciting time to be an Eagle!
