I have the privilege of teaching, yet another year, here at Santa Ynez High School. My teaching career began here in 1983 as a Home Economics teacher and my position has evolved into teaching Health and Career Choices to Freshmen and Electives at our Refugio High School campus. I attended and graduated from Santa Barbara City College and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo for my Bachelor of Science degree and Teaching Credential. I am married and have two terrific children ages 22 and 19, life is good.
My goal in teaching Health is to provide students with a relationship between student and teacher that is a safe place to come for information and advise throughout their high school years. I focus on helping students make personal choices that they may face in their lives. Topics the standards touch on are: Personality, Self Esteem, Prejudice, Violence, Peer Pressure, Substance Abuse, Eating Disorders, Cutting, Suicide, Relationships, Reproduction, Pregnancy, Social Diseases, Healthy Living and First Aid.
Most assignments in Health will be given time during the class period so it is important for students use classroom time wisely by taking good notes during presentations/discussions, guest speakers and videos. We have a classroom set of textbooks for students to use in class. If a student needs to check out a text for use at home, they may do so in the library. Time is given during class to work on and complete assignments. If a student does not have time to finish an assignment, they may complete it in the library at lunch, after school, or in a tutorial class with another teacher. Text assignments will be due 1 week from the date they were assigned.
Extra credit is available throughout the semester, see explanation in the document section. A student should see me for missed assignments due to absences.
